Hans Thore Smedbold

Hans Thore Smedbold is a certified occupational hygienist and university lecturer at the Norwegian University of Science and Technology (NTNU), affiliated with the Department of Community Medicine and Nursing under the Faculty of Medicine and Health Sciences. He has over 30 years of experience in occupational hygiene, combining research, teaching, and practical assessments. His current roles include leading the Norwegian Occupational Hygiene Association and serving on the board of the European Platform for Occupational Hygiene.

Research interests focus on exposure assessment in occupational settings, particularly hydrogen sulfide (H₂S) in wastewater management, bioaerosols in salmon processing (SHINE project), and chemical exposure risks in industries like welding. He actively advocates for improved occupational hygiene education standards and stricter exposure limits for harmful substances.

His work spans diverse sectors including agriculture (manure gas accidents), healthcare (indoor air quality), and industrial environments (epoxy resins, aerosol hazards). Key contributions include developing exposure assessment algorithms and influencing national and EU occupational safety policies.

Teaching involvement includes courses on occupational hygiene and medical toxicology for medical students. He also contributes editorially to Yrkeshygienikeren and Store Norske Leksikon.
