Hans Rummel

Professor Hans Rummel (b. 1941) holds the distinction of being the first non-Polish academic honored with a Doctor honoris causa from Gdynia Maritime University (2023). A full-time professor at Hochschule Bremerhaven from 1972 to 2006, he specialized in teaching Maritime English using innovative methods like language labs and computer-assisted learning. His academic contributions span pedagogical innovations in ESP, historical research on World War II, and pioneering work in standardizing maritime communication protocols (e.g., SMNV/SMCP).

As a key figure in international academic cooperation, he orchestrated over 45 years of collaboration between Hochschule Bremerhaven and Gdynia Maritime University, including dual degree programs, Erasmus exchanges, and joint publications like Joint Proceedings. His initiatives such as the Association of Friends of Dar Młodzieży (1993) furthered cultural reconciliation between Germany and Poland. Awards include the Polish Knight's Cross of Merit (2003) and honorary membership from his home institution.
