Hans Otto Frøland

Hans Otto Frøland is Professor of Modern European History at the Norwegian University of Science and Technology (NTNU), Faculty of Humanities, Department of Modern Social History. His core expertise lies in European integration, the political economy of raw materials, and the history of Nazi occupation and forced labour in Norway.

Research interests: Frøland explores the long-term processes of European integration, economic globalisation, and the role of natural resources in modern history. He has published extensively on Norway’s wartime economy, Organisation Todt, and the post-war legal purges of war profiteers. His recent work expands into Nordic comparative studies of forced migration and refugee policies.

Publication trends: Over the past decade his output has clustered around three domains: (1) detailed archival studies of Nazi occupation and forced labour in Norway, (2) commodity-centred investigations of aluminium and copper industries linking business, state and international diplomacy, and (3) comparative Nordic histories of refugees and labour migration. Exhibitions, edited volumes and policy-oriented articles complement his monographic research.
