Notable contributions include analyzing the Animacy Hierarchy, changes in plural inflection, and the autonomy of morphology in the context of sound laws.
His publications reveal a focus on historical linguistics, morphosyntactic variation, and agreement patterns across Scandinavian languages. Enger has contributed to understanding gender assignment mechanisms, definiteness markers, and syntactic evolution in Norwegian dialects and beyond.
Enger has supervised MA theses on topics like gender appropriation in Norwegian, linguistic features in multiethnic environments, and inflectional class changes. He actively participates in the Language Change research group and has co-edited the journal Maal og Minne since 2016.
