Hans Martin Schmid is Professor Emeritus at ETH Zürich's Department of Physics, specializing in astronomical instrumentation and polarimetric studies of planetary systems. He led development of the Zurich IMaging POLarimeter (ZIMPOL) for the SPHERE/VLT Planet Finder instrument.
His research examines light scattering in circumstellar environments using high-contrast imaging techniques. Key projects include studies of debris disks around young stars, evolved stellar shells, and atmospheric characterization of extended red giants.
Professor Schmid supervised seven doctoral theses on polarimetric techniques and their applications to solar system objects and extrasolar planet detection. He taught astrophysics courses covering interstellar matter, astronomical instrumentation, and galactic structure.
