Dr. Hanqin Tian is a Professor in the Department of Earth and Environmental Sciences at Boston College. With a Ph.D. from SUNY-ESF and Syracuse University, he combines Earth system science with interdisciplinary modeling to study global biogeochemical cycles and their interactions with climate change.
- Education: B.S. (Zhejiang University), M.S. (Chinese Academy of Agricultural Sciences), Ph.D. (SUNY-ESF/Syracuse University)
- Research Themes: Global Change Ecology, Coupled Biogeochemical Cycles, Terrestrial Biosphere Modeling, Nature-Based Solutions
His work integrates AI, satellite data, and process-based models to analyze terrestrial biosphere dynamics, focusing on carbon, nitrogen, and phosphorus cycles, greenhouse gas accounting, and the food-energy-water nexus. Recent studies examine climate extremes, wildfire impacts, and land-ocean aquatic continuum interactions.
Key publications include:
- 2024: Global N2O budget quantification (Nature, Nature Climate Change)
- 2023: Mississippi River nitrogen legacy effects (Global Change Biology)
- 2022: Agricultural nitrogen trends (Earth System Science Data)
- 2020: Comprehensive N2O budget framework (Nature)
His teaching includes graduate courses like Terrestrial Biosphere Modeling and he mentors students in ecosystem science and sustainability research.
