Hannes Gislason

Professor Hannes Gislason is a faculty member at the Faculty of Science and Technology, University of the Faroe Islands, where he leads the BSc in Software Engineering and MSc in Data Science. His work bridges Data Science, Biostatistics, and Genomics, with a focus on computational analysis using R/RStudio and Python. He also contributes to Applied Mathematics and Physics through statistical modeling.

Research interests span Biostatistics, Bioinformatics, and Genomics, particularly in analyzing whole-genome DNA data from the isolated Faroese population to study inbreeding and genetic disorders. He also investigates Marine Biology through projects on Atlantic herring genomes and sea lice count data in salmon farms.

Recent publications highlight his expertise in Population Genetics, Antimicrobial Resistance, and Public Health. He supervised PhD projects on Primary Carnitine Deficiency, Antimicrobial Resistance, and Herring Genomics. Grants include funding for HerGen 2014 and COVID-19 studies.

Teaching includes courses in Data Science, Software Engineering, and Statistical Methods. He has served as Educational Leader for software engineering programs and as Head of Department (2012–2015). Prior to academia, he worked in Telecom R&D (1993–1999) and Aquaculture Research (2005–2008).
