Hannes Federrath is a Professor at the University of Hamburg's Department of Computer Science (MIN Faculty), leading the Security in Distributed Systems working group since 2011. He holds a Ph.D. from Dresden University of Technology (1998) and has held roles including guest researcher at UC Berkeley (1999-2000), guest professor in Berlin (2000-2001), and full professor at University Regensburg (2003-2011). His research focuses on cybersecurity, data protection, privacy-enhancing technologies, and IT policy frameworks.
Key roles include serving as President of the German Informatics Society (GI) from 2018-2021 and Chair of GI's Security Special Interest Group (2011-2016). He advises the German Federal Ministry for Digital Affairs and Transport and contributes to initiatives like the BSI Advisory Board for Digital Consumer Protection and the MINT Zukunft schaffen program.
