Hannes E. Buelow is a Professor in both the Department of Genetics and the Dominick P. Purpura Department of Neuroscience at Albert Einstein College of Medicine. His research focuses on neural patterning, extracellular matrices, and glycosaminoglycans in development and disease, primarily using the nematode Caenorhabditis elegans as a model organism.
His research interests include three major projects: (1) understanding dendrite patterning in neurological disorders, (2) investigating synaptic connectivity changes during learning and memory, and (3) studying glycosaminoglycan molecular diversity in development and disease. His work leverages genetic, behavioral, and imaging approaches, with recent collaborations exploring glycan-based cell characterization in mammals.
Key findings include the 'HS code' hypothesis, which proposes that heparan sulfate modifications guide neural development, and discoveries about muscle/skin cues shaping sensory dendrites. His research spans from molecular mechanisms to systems-level neural circuit restructuring during learning.
Publications highlight contributions to live glycan imaging, axon-dendrite interactions, and glycobiology's role in health/disease. Collaborations with Drs. Almo, Steidl, and Zheng underscore interdisciplinary approaches to translational research.
