Hannah Wohl

Hannah Wohl is an Associate Professor of Sociology at the University of California, Santa Barbara (UCSB), affiliated with the College of Letters and Science. For the 2023-2024 academic year, she is on leave as a member at the Institute for Advanced Study in Princeton. She holds a Ph.D. from Northwestern University and completed a postdoctoral fellowship at Columbia University.

Her research focuses on judgment, valuation, and creativity in social interaction. Key areas include contemporary art markets, academic evaluation processes, and the pornography industry. She employs ethnographic methods to explore how aesthetic, economic, and moral judgments intersect in creative industries. Wohl’s book *Bound by Creativity* (2021) examines how artists navigate market pressures and social interactions to shape their creative decisions.

Wohl has received awards from the ASA’s Theory, Culture, and Consumers and Consumption Sections, as well as the Society for the Study of Symbolic Interaction. Her work has been published in journals like *Sociological Theory*, *Poetics*, and *American Journal of Cultural Sociology*. She teaches courses on creative industries, culture, and qualitative methods, and currently directs the Sociology Honors Program.
