Hannah Wiseman is a Professor of Law at Penn State Law (University Park) and a Professor and Wilson Faculty Fellow in the College of Earth and Mineral Sciences at Pennsylvania State University. She is also an Institute of Energy and the Environment Co-funded Faculty Member. Her primary roles involve teaching and research in Energy Law, Oil & Gas Law, Environmental Law, and Administrative Law.
Her research focuses on regulatory design and governance in energy sectors, including challenges in federalism, environmental policy, and the transition to clean energy. Key areas include hydraulic fracturing regulations, carbon sequestration policy, and the legal frameworks governing energy externalities. Recent work explores geospatial planning for carbon sequestration and strategies for retiring coal plants while mitigating health impacts.
Wiseman has been recognized as a Wilson Faculty Fellow and received the Institute of Energy and the Environment Excellence Recognition in 2025. Her contributions include co-authoring influential textbooks such as Energy, Economics, and the Environment and Energy Law, alongside peer-reviewed articles in top journals like the NYU Law Review and Duke Law Journal.
In addition to her academic work, she leads interdisciplinary projects on solar adoption in wastewater sectors and coal plant retirement impacts. These efforts emphasize energy justice and policy innovation. Wiseman collaborates with the Institute of Energy and the Environment, contributing to its mission of advancing sustainable energy solutions through research and education.
