Dr. Hannah Volpert-Esmond is an Assistant Professor in Psychology at the University of Texas at El Paso's College of Liberal Arts. Her research examines neurocognitive mechanisms of social categorization and mental health impacts of racial discrimination. She directs the RENHL Lab exploring face perception, discrimination stress, and health disparities using EEG and longitudinal methods.
Research investigates: 1) Neural correlates of race/gender categorization using event-related potentials; 2) Longitudinal mental health effects of discrimination through smartphone-based ecological momentary assessment. Key findings include temporal dynamics of discrimination stress and neurobehavioral coupling during social judgments.
Recent publications demonstrate focus on psychophysiological responses to discrimination among marginalized groups, particularly Latino and Black communities. Article analysis reveals methodological innovation in multilevel modeling of EEG data and cultural stress documentation.
Honors include the SPSSI Dissertation Award and NSF/NIMH grants totaling over $400,000. Mentees include doctoral candidate M. Aboargob studying vicarious discrimination effects, and undergraduate researchers examining neurocognitive attention patterns.
