Hamed Hassani is an Associate Professor at the University of Pennsylvania, affiliated with the Department of Electrical and Systems Engineering, Department of Computer and Information Systems, and Department of Statistics and Data Science at the Wharton Business School. He is also a visiting faculty researcher at Google Research (NYC) and serves as the Penn site-lead for EnCORE: Institute for Emerging CORE Methods of Data Science.
Dr. Hassani's research focuses on submodular optimization, robustness of neural networks, distributed/federated learning, modern coding theory, probabilistic models, and graph matching algorithms. His work bridges theoretical advancements with practical applications in machine learning, data science, and information theory.
His recent publications analyze adversarial robustness, conformal prediction, and AI safety, with notable awards including the IEEE Massey Research and Teaching Award (2023), IEEE Joint Paper Award (2023), NSF CAREER (2019), AFOSR Young Investigator Award (2019), and Intel Rising Star Faculty Awardee (2020).
Dr. Hassani has advised PhD students such as Davis Brown (co-advised with Eric Wong) and contributed to collaborative learning frameworks. He actively participates in conferences as a program committee member and invited speaker, with recent tutorials at ICML 2025 on AI safety.
