Halil İbrahim Karakan is a Lecturer at Gaziantep University's Tourism and Hotel Management Vocational School, Department of Hotel, Restaurant and Catering Services. He has been serving at the university since 2013 and currently holds the position of Head of Department (2024). His academic focus spans tourism management, sustainable tourism practices, and hotel operations.
Dr. Karakan completed his education with a Doctorate in Tourism Management from Mersin University (2013-2019), a Master's in Business Administration from Gaziantep University (2010-2012), and an Associate Degree in Law Justice from Anadolu University (2020-2022). His undergraduate studies were in Accommodation Management at Mersin University College of Tourism and Hotel Management.
Dr. Karakan's research interests focus on sustainable tourism development, destination management, consumer behavior in tourism contexts, and hospitality operations. His work particularly examines sustainable consumption patterns, diaspora tourism, eco-tourism practices, and the impact of digital technologies on travel behavior. He has made significant contributions to understanding tourism in post-pandemic contexts and the relationship between tourism development and local community perspectives.
His recent publications demonstrate a strong trend toward examining sustainability in tourism, with particular attention to environmental behaviors, conscious consumption, and the integration of refugees and immigrants into tourism destinations. His research also explores emerging technologies in tourism, including urban air mobility and digital platforms like TripAdvisor. The geographical focus of his work centers on Turkey, with specific attention to Gaziantep as a case study for many of his investigations.

Dr. Karakan has served in various administrative roles including Head of Department (2024), Erasmus Coordinator (2014-2016), and Deputy Head of Department (2014-2016). His teaching portfolio is extensive, covering subjects such as Human Resources Management, Entrepreneurship, Hotel Management, General Business, Organizational Behavior, Front Office Management, Sustainable Tourism, and Workplace Training. He maintains regular consulting hours for students, currently on Tuesdays between 12:30-13:00.
His research activities are supported by his participation in numerous academic conferences and his extensive publication record, including book chapters, journal articles, and conference proceedings focused on tourism and hospitality management.
