Hakki Tas

Dr. Hakki Tas is a Research Fellow at the GIGA Institute for Middle East Studies since February 2018. His research focuses on democratization, civil-military relations, political Islam, identity politics in the Middle East, and power dynamics. He holds a PhD in Political Science from Bilkent University, with prior roles including assistant professorships and fellowships at institutions like the University of Bremen and the Swedish Defence University. His work explores Turkey’s foreign policy, authoritarian consolidation, and the role of militaries in populist regimes. He contributes to projects like the BMBF-funded World Order Narratives of the Global South (WONAGO). Dr. Tas has published in journals such as Democratization and International Relations, and lectures frequently on Turkish politics and Middle Eastern studies.
