Hakan Bilen is an Associate Professor (Reader) in the School of Informatics at the University of Edinburgh, leading the Visual Computing Group (VICO). He holds dual affiliations as an ELLIS Fellow and member of the Computer Vision research group at the university.
His academic journey includes:
- Bachelor's and Master's degrees from Sabanci University, where he conducted micro-robotics research under Mustafa Unel
- PhD from KU Leuven's VISICS group supervised by Luc Van Gool and Tinne Tuytelaars
- Postdoctoral research at Oxford's Visual Geometry Group with Andrea Vedaldi
Dr. Bilen's research centers on advancing computer vision through machine learning methodologies, with particular emphasis on image classification frameworks, weakly supervised object detection systems, and human action recognition models. He has instructed the Machine Learning Practical course at Edinburgh since 2018, integrating theoretical concepts with hands-on applications.
