Hai Xiao

Hai Xiao is the Holcombe Endowed Chair and Chair of the Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering at Clemson University. He is also jointly affiliated with the Center for Optical Materials Science and Engineering Technologies (COMSET). Previously, he was a Professor of Electrical Engineering at Missouri University of Science and Technology, where he founded the Photonics Technology Laboratory (PTL).

Research Interests: Dr. Xiao's research focuses on photonic and microwave sensors and instrumentation for applications in energy, intelligent infrastructure, clean environment, biomedical sensing/imaging, and national security. His current research thrust areas include the development of novel optical/microwave micro/nanomaterials, fiber optic sensors for harsh environments, ultrafast laser machining, and optical biomedical imaging techniques.

His work has led to over 160 technical publications and participation in 29 research projects totaling approximately $14M in funding from NSF, DOE, ONR, NIH, ARO, national laboratories, and private companies.

Research Funding and Leadership: Dr. Xiao has led or participated in 29 research projects, securing about $14 million in funding over the past decade. He founded the Photonics Technology Laboratory (PTL) at Missouri S&T and continues to lead research initiatives at Clemson University.
