Hagerr Barbouch Ben Fraj serves as an Assistant Professor in Design at the Higher School of Sciences and Technologies of Design, specializing in the critical intersection of industrial heritage and contemporary design practice within Tunisian cultural contexts.
Her research program focuses on industrial heritage preservation with particular emphasis on artisanal industries and cultural memory systems. Through detailed case studies like the Chechia of El Battan—a traditional Tunisian hat continuously produced since 1846—she investigates how historical artifacts function as vessels of social memory and catalysts for innovation in traditional craftsmanship. Her work bridges anthropological analysis with design thinking to develop sustainable frameworks for preserving cultural heritage while enabling contemporary relevance.
Analysis of her recent publication reveals consistent engagement with post-colonial craft revival, material culture studies, and sustainable artisanal practices. Her research demonstrates how industrial heritage landscapes can inform contemporary design solutions while maintaining cultural authenticity, particularly through the lens of Tunisian artisanal traditions spanning nearly two centuries.
