Hadi Dowlatabadi is a Professor Emeritus and former Canada Research Chair in Applied Mathematics of Global Change at the University of British Columbia's Institute for Resources, Environment and Sustainability. His interdisciplinary research examines human-technology-environment interactions, particularly regarding climate change, energy systems, and sustainable development.
His work addresses complex challenges at the nexus of energy, environment, health and policy through integrated assessment modeling. Key research areas include: decarbonization pathways for maritime shipping and buildings; behavioral responses to climate information; resilience of transportation networks; carsharing impacts; and critical analysis of climate economic models. He founded Project Seahorse and co-created the ICAM integrated assessment model.
Recent publications reflect his focus on practical solutions for climate mitigation, including expert assessments of shipping decarbonization, behavioral interventions for emission reduction, and analyses of financing mechanisms for low-carbon transitions. His work consistently bridges technical analysis with socioeconomic dimensions of sustainability.
He has supervised over 30 PhD students on topics spanning energy economics, climate policy, distributed generation, and conservation governance. Though retired since July 2022 and no longer accepting students, his legacy includes mentoring generations of sustainability scholars and co-founding several companies advancing zero-carbon technologies.
