HECTOR ALVAREZ POL

HECTOR ALVAREZ POL is a Professor of Atomic, Nuclear and Molecular Physics at the University of Santiago de Compostela (USC), affiliated with the Department of Particle Physics in the Faculty of Physics. He is a member of the Galician Institute of High Energy Physics (IGFAE) and the FICA research group (Corpuscular Physics and Applications). His doctoral thesis, completed in 2002 at USC under Dr. Ignacio Durán Escribano, focused on the alignment of Multiwire Drift Chambers for the HADES dilepton spectrometer.

His research emphasizes experimental nuclear physics, particularly nuclear fission dynamics, exotic nuclei, and advanced detector technology. Key areas include fission fragment yields, quasi-free scattering reactions, and the development of detectors like the CALIFA calorimeter and the Active Target Time Projection Chamber (ACTAR TPC). He collaborates with major facilities such as FAIR (Facility for Antiproton and Ion Research) and has contributed to projects like TRASGO and TRISTAN.

Recent work highlights include applying machine learning to predict fission cross sections, studying multinucleon knockout reactions in exotic nuclei, and investigating fission mechanisms under extreme conditions. His group explores neutron-skin thickness determination, symmetry energy, and halo nuclei behavior, with applications in astrophysical nucleosynthesis and dark matter detection.
