H.J.W. Zandvliet is a Full Professor at the University of Twente, affiliated with the MESA+ Institute and the Physics of Interfaces and Nanomaterials research group within the Faculty of Science and Technology. He specializes in surface science, 2D materials, and topological insulators, with a focus on nanomaterials and condensed matter physics. His work spans experimental and theoretical studies of atomic-scale phenomena in materials like germanene, silicene, and MoS₂.
Recent research highlights include the realization of one-dimensional topological insulators in germanene nanoribbons and investigations into humidity-driven interactions in 2D materials. He has co-authored over 629 publications and contributed to datasets supporting studies on material characterization. Zandvliet has been recognized with prestigious awards, including the 2017 Prize for Enhanced Water Diffusion research and the 2012 Hellenthal Prize.
His advisory work includes supervising 45 students and leading collaborative efforts in nanotechnology. He frequently presents at international conferences, discussing topics like quantum effects in 2D systems and atomic-scale surface dynamics.
