H.J. François Dengah is an Associate Professor in the Department of Anthropology at Florida State University. His research focuses on biocultural medical anthropology, particularly the interplay between cultural conformity (cultural consonance) and psychological/physiological well-being. He specializes in mixed-methods approaches and has studied cultural stress dynamics among Brazilians, video gamers, and religious groups. Dengah earned his Ph.D. in Anthropology from the University of Alabama (2013), and his M.A. and B.A. from Colorado State University.
He directs the Collaborative Anthropological Research Laboratory (CARL), which emphasizes hands-on research training for students at all levels. CARL alumni have pursued diverse careers, including academia, military service, and law enforcement. His book Systematic Methods for Analyzing Culture: A Practical Guide provides a framework for integrating qualitative and quantitative research methods.
Dengah’s research explores how cultural norms impact health outcomes, with a focus on stress-related mechanisms in gaming communities and religious contexts. His recent work includes studies on avatar-player dynamics, causal reasoning in ethnography, and the adaptation of machismo in Brazil.
He actively recruits graduate students interested in cognitive and medical anthropology, emphasizing methodological rigor and applied research. His work bridges anthropological theory with practical applications, advocating for culturally sensitive interventions in global health and digital subcultures.
