H.B.J. Karperien is a faculty member at the University of Twente, affiliated with the Faculty of Science and Technology (TNW), where he leads the Developmental BioEngineering (TNW-BET-DBE) research group within the Bioengineering Technologies section. He is also associated with the TechMed Centre, focusing on translational medical technologies.
His research centers on regenerative medicine, particularly cartilage repair and tissue engineering. Key areas include chondrocyte biology, mesenchymal stem cell culture, and the biochemical and molecular mechanisms underlying tissue development. His work integrates stem cell biology with bioengineering to develop novel therapies for degenerative joint diseases.
H.B.J. Karperien is actively engaged in academic and industrial collaboration, with significant contributions to biotechnology commercialization. He has founded or co-founded multiple biotech ventures including Hy2Care b.v., Orthros Medical, and LipoCoat b.v., where he holds leadership and advisory roles. He also serves as a guest lecturer at Saxion University of Applied Sciences and contributes to academic dissemination through editorial activities on Academia.edu.
He supervises research within the Developmental BioEngineering group and is involved in multidisciplinary teams working on stem cell-based tissue regeneration. His work bridges fundamental science and clinical application, supported by strong industry partnerships and entrepreneurial initiatives.
