H.B.J. Karperien is a faculty member at the University of Twente, affiliated with the Faculty of Science and Technology (TNW), where he leads the Developmental BioEngineering (TNW-BET-DBE) research group within the Bioengineering Technologies section. He is also associated with the TechMed Centre, focusing on translational medical technologies.
His research centers on regenerative medicine, particularly cartilage repair and tissue engineering. Key areas include chondrocyte biology, mesenchymal stem cell culture, and the biochemical and molecular mechanisms underlying tissue development.
