Prof. Bart Verheij is a full professor of Artificial Intelligence and Argumentation at the University of Groningen, affiliated with the Bernoulli Institute for Mathematics, Computer Science, and Artificial Intelligence. He leads the Responsible Hybrid Intelligence research line within the NWO Zwaartekracht Hybrid Intelligence project and serves as head of the Artificial Intelligence department (2018–2024). His work bridges AI with legal reasoning, evidential analysis, and ethical systems design, emphasizing responsible AI development.
- Affiliations: Bernoulli Institute, Faculty of Science and Engineering; Hybrid Intelligence Zwaartekracht project (co-coordinator).
- Education: MSc Mathematics (UvA, 1991), PhD Computer Science/Law (Maastricht University, 1996).
Research: Focuses on computational argumentation, AI in law, evidential reasoning (e.g., Bayesian networks for forensic scenarios), ethical AI systems, and hybrid intelligence. He co-edits journals like Argument and Computation and chairs international conferences (e.g., COMMA, ICAIL).
Grants/Awards: Leads major national projects (e.g., Hybrid Intelligence, NWO Gravitation) and collaborates internationally (Stanford CodeX, Sun Yat-Sen University). No specific awards listed, but extensive editorial and leadership roles reflect recognition.
Labs/Teams: Directs research on AI ethics, legal reasoning, and hybrid intelligence systems. Mentors a team of PhD candidates and postdocs in multi-agent systems and responsible AI.
