H. Burak Gunay is a Professor in the Department of Civil and Environmental Engineering within Carleton University's Faculty of Engineering and Design. He maintains an active research profile through the Carleton Building Performance Research Centre (BPRC), a collaborative group of six professors across Civil/Environmental and Mechanical/Aerospace Engineering with approximately forty students and post-doctoral fellows.
His research spans several critical areas in modern building science, with particular focus on adaptive indoor climate control systems, automated fault detection and diagnostics, and data-driven modeling approaches for building performance. His work integrates building performance simulation with big data analytics for intelligent building applications, addressing energy efficiency and indoor environmental quality challenges.
Professor Gunay teaches multiple courses including ACSE/CIVE 3209 Building Science and BLDG 5301 Building Energy Management & Optimization for the 2025-2026 academic year. His previous teaching assignments demonstrate extensive expertise across building science curriculum, covering Energy Modeling for Existing Buildings, Green Building Design, and Indoor Environmental Quality courses at both undergraduate and graduate levels.
As part of the BPRC, his research aligns with key themes in building energy systems, greenhouse gas emissions reduction, and advanced building controls. The center's facilities including the Solar Energy Systems Laboratory and Human Building Interaction Lab support his work in experimental and simulation-based approaches to residential and commercial building performance.
