H V Jagadish

H V Jagadish is the Edgar F Codd Distinguished University Professor and Bernard A Galler Collegiate Professor of Electrical Engineering and Computer Science at the University of Michigan, College of Engineering. He serves as Director of the Michigan Institute for Data and AI in Society (MIDAS), leading strategic initiatives in data science and AI ethics across the university.

His research spans database systems, data integration, and the societal impact of data science. Early work focused on schema design and database usability for heterogeneous data sources, while recent efforts prioritize equity, ethics, and fairness in AI systems. He directs the NSF-funded FIDES institute developing frameworks to identify and mitigate data inequities, emphasizing real-world societal benefits through reliable analytics.

He leads the university's database research group and previously directed the Software Systems Laboratory (2007-2014). Current work through MIDAS and FIDES centers on interdisciplinary collaboration to harness data science benefits while addressing risks of bias and inequity in AI-driven decision systems.
