Gwilym Eades

Gwilym Eades is a Lecturer in Human/Environmental Geography at the Department of Geography, Royal Holloway, University of London. He holds a PhD from McGill University and has expertise in speculative fiction spatialities, counter-mapping, and indigenous geographies. His research explores intersections between science fiction, cartography, and cultural conflict.

Education: BSc (University of Victoria), AdvTech (College of New Caledonia), MA (Carleton University), PhD (McGill University).

Research focuses on speculative fiction’s spatial dimensions, counter-mapping in northern regions (Canada/Scotland), and indigenous knowledge systems. His monographs include Maps and Memes: Redrawing Culture, Place and Identity in Indigenous Communities (2015) and The Geography of Names: Indigenous to Post-foundational (2017). Current projects include a book on speculative fiction spatialities and studies of the North Coast 500 as a counter-map.

Teaching includes courses on critical GIS, geoweb analysis, and digital geographies. Administrative roles include directing the GeoVisual Methods Lab and serving on the ICT4D Management Board.

Awards: Fellow of the Royal Geographical Society and Higher Education Academy. Active in societies like the British Science Fiction Association and Society for Name Studies in Britain and Ireland.

Grants and projects include ICT4E initiatives, AGIS Ground Truth studies, and mesh networks in rural Mankosi. Supervised one doctoral student to date. His work contributes to UN SDGs related to sustainable communities and cultural preservation.
