Gwen V. Childs, Ph.D., FAAA is Professor and Chair of the Department of Neurobiology and Developmental Sciences at the University of Arkansas for Medical Sciences (UAMS) College of Medicine in Little Rock, Arkansas. Previously, she held positions as Professor of Anatomy at the University of Texas Medical Branch (UTMB) in Galveston (1981-April 2000), Associate Professor of Anatomy at Northwestern University College of Medicine (1976), and Assistant Professor of Anatomy at the University of Nebraska Medical Center (1972). She has served in various leadership roles including Vice-Chair of the Department of Anatomy and Neuroscience, Program Director of the Cell Biology Graduate Program, and Coordinator of the Basic Science Core for the Integrated Medical Curriculum at UTMB.
- B.A., Biology, Whitman College, Walla Walla, Washington (1966)
- Ph.D., Anatomy, University of Iowa, Iowa City, Iowa (1972)
Dr. Childs' research focuses on the regulation of specific anterior pituitary cells by neuroendocrine peptides and growth factors. Her laboratory has made significant contributions to understanding the dynamic changes in gonadotropes during the reproductive cycle, particularly investigating whether growth hormone cells function as co-gonadotropes. Her recent work centers on the role of leptin in regulating pituitary gonadotropes and somatotropes. Using advanced techniques including immunogold cytochemistry, affinity cytochemistry, in situ hybridization, dual labeling, and centrifugal elutriation, her research has revealed important insights into pituitary cell biology and reproductive physiology.
Analysis of Dr. Childs' recent publications shows a strong focus on the molecular mechanisms of pituitary regulation, particularly leptin signaling pathways in gonadotropes, differential expression of hormone receptors during reproductive cycles, and cellular interactions within the pituitary gland. Her work spans cellular, molecular, and systems-level endocrinology with applications to reproductive health and metabolic disorders.
- Distinguished Teacher Award, Graduate School of Biomedical Sciences, University of Texas Medical Branch (2000)
- Innovations in Education Award, College of Medicine, UAMS (2004)
- Golden Apple Award Runner-up, Freshman Class (2007)
- Multiple Red Sash and Gold Sash Awards from Senior Medical Classes (2006-2011)
- Outstanding Woman Faculty Award, Woman's Faculty Development Caucus, UAMS (2009)
- Fellow of the American Association of Anatomists (FAAA) (2011)
Dr. Childs has mentored numerous graduate students including James Patterson, Xuemo Fan, Jennifer Armstrong, Jiangang Xie, Mary Iruthayanathan, Angela Odle, and Melody Allensworth. Her research has been consistently funded by the National Institutes of Health (NIH) since 1974, including R01 HD059056-05 for studies on leptin signaling in pituitary cells. She has also received funding from the National Science Foundation (NSF), Sealy Smith Foundation grants, and other sources. Her laboratory has made significant contributions to understanding the division of labor among gonadotropes and their interactions with other pituitary cell types.
Dr. Childs' laboratory utilizes specialized techniques including immunogold cytochemistry for hormone detection, affinity cytochemistry for receptor detection, in situ hybridization for mRNA detection, dual labeling methods, and centrifugal elutriation to enrich specific pituitary cell populations. Her team has also employed more routine technologies such as electron microscopy, cytology, radioimmunoassay, image analysis, and various molecular biology techniques. Current research directions include studying leptin regulation of gonadotropin-releasing hormone receptors through JAK2, PI3K, mTOR, and MAPK signaling pathways.
