Guya Accornero is an active Assistant Professor at ISCTE - University Institute of Lisbon, where she is affiliated with the Department of Political Science and Public Policy and serves as Coordinator of the Politics and Citizenship research group at CIES-Iscte (Center for Research and Studies in Sociology). She is also an integrated researcher at CIES-Iscte and deputy director of the Observatory of Democracy and Political Representation. Her academic leadership extends to her role as board member of the Council of European Studies' Research Network on Social Movements, having previously served as its Chair from 2018-2022.
Dr. Accornero's research focuses on social movements, political radicalization, and the right to housing, with particular attention to digital activism and gentrification. Her work spans across multiple continents, examining protest dynamics in Portugal, Southern Europe, Africa, and Latin America. She has published extensively in top journals including Housing Studies, Social Movement Studies, and West European Politics, with her 2016 monograph "The Revolution before the Revolution" establishing her scholarly reputation.
Her recent publications (2022-2024) demonstrate evolving research interests toward climate activism, youth political imaginaries, and digital democracy, while maintaining strong connections to her core expertise in housing movements and political participation. The thematic progression shows increasing attention to transnational and comparative perspectives, particularly regarding anti-extractivist movements in Africa and solidarity networks in urban contexts.

Dr. Accornero has secured significant research funding, most notably as Principal Investigator for the €230,000 FCT-funded HOPES project (2018-2022) examining housing movements in Lisbon. She actively mentors students through her role as 2nd Year Coordinator for the Bachelor's Degree in Political Science (2024-2025) and has organized numerous academic events, including over 30 seminars and conferences between 2023-2025 on topics ranging from political voice of marginalized groups to climate futures.
Her research infrastructure includes leadership of the Politics and Citizenship group at CIES-Iscte, which serves as a hub for interdisciplinary work connecting political science, sociology, and urban studies scholars. The group maintains strong international networks, particularly through the Council of European Studies and collaborations with institutions in Africa and Latin America.
