Guy Carpenter is Professor of Oral Biology at King's College London's Dental School and affiliated with the Centre for Host Microbiome Interactions. His research contributes to UN Sustainable Development Goals through advancements in oral health science and disease management.
His work centers on saliva secretion mechanisms and functional interactions in health and disease, with emphasis on taste perception, mouthfeel dynamics, and pathophysiological oral dryness in Sjögren's syndrome, radiation therapy, and medication-induced xerostomia. He investigates molecular interactions between salivary proteins/ions and oral surfaces (mucosa, teeth) and their role in microbial homeostasis.
Recent publications (2023-2024) reveal interdisciplinary trends spanning head/neck cancer radiotherapy complications, dental erosion microbiology, orthodontic biomechanics, and therapeutic protein engineering. Key themes include salivary biomarkers for oral mucositis/caries, sensory science of food texture, and novel biofilm characterization techniques.
Professor Carpenter supervises 14 students and leads 30+ funded projects including:
- Mucoadhesion of oral actives (Haleon, 2023-2027)
- Optimizing chlorhexidine binding (Haleon, 2023-2027)
- Reducing food protein astringency (Motif Ingredients, 2021-2025)
- Microfluidic biofilm characterization (BBSRC, 2023-2024)
He chairs sessions at the European Symposium on Saliva, serves on the Journal of Dental Research editorial board since 2009, and delivers invited lectures on salivary gland regeneration and autonomic innervation.
