Gustavo Monti serves as Associate Professor in Infectious Disease Epidemiology at Wageningen University & Research's Wageningen Institute for Animal Sciences. His work bridges veterinary science, public health, and ecological systems through a One Health framework.
Research focuses on zoonotic disease dynamics, particularly Leptospira transmission in human-wildlife-livestock interfaces and bovine pathogen epidemiology. Key areas include dairy cattle reproductive health, wildlife reservoir monitoring in nature reserves, and pandemic prevention through food system restructuring. Recent work demonstrates strong Brazil-Netherlands collaboration patterns addressing urban homelessness health risks and tropical veterinary challenges.
His publication portfolio shows consistent output in high-impact journals including Frontiers in Public Health, Transboundary and Emerging Diseases, and One Health, with emphasis on practical applications for disease control. Current projects examine Hepatitis E virus cross-species transmission and herbivore health in Dutch nature reserves.
As PhD co-promotor, he supervises candidates investigating pathogen transmission between animal species and humans, demonstrating active mentorship in veterinary epidemiology. His research integrates field surveillance with policy-relevant analysis, evidenced by policy document references and social media engagement metrics.
