Dr. Gurtina Besla is a Professor in the Department of Astronomy and Astronomer at Steward Observatory, University of Arizona. Her research focuses on theoretical astrophysics, utilizing simulations to study the dynamics of the Milky Way, LMC, and SMC galaxies to constrain dark matter distribution. She revolutionized understanding of these satellite galaxies as recent interlopers rather than long-term companions.
Research Interests: Galactic structure, dark matter halos, cosmological simulations, galaxy interactions, and evolution of dwarf galaxies. Her work bridges computational astrophysics with observational constraints.
Student Advising & Outreach: Actively mentors graduate students and founded the TIMESTEP program to support underrepresented minorities in physics/astronomy through academic mentorship and career guidance. Leads the Steward Theory, Data and Computation Group.
