Dr. Guntram Herb is a Professor in the Department of Geography at Middlebury College, teaching courses such as Border Geographies and Political Geography. He holds a Vordiplom and Diplom from Eberhard-Karls-Universität Tübingen, Germany, and a Ph.D. from the University of Wisconsin-Madison. His research focuses on political geography, nationalism, and cartography, with a particular interest in borders, territorial disputes, and the role of maps in shaping power dynamics. He directs the Border Rites research project and has authored/co-edited significant works including Scaling Identities and the Cambridge World Atlas. Herb advises senior theses and oversees independent studies, emphasizing critical cartography and geopolitical analysis. His teaching spans undergraduate and graduate levels, integrating historical, theoretical, and applied perspectives.
