Gunilla Almström Persson is an Associate Professor and Senior Lecturer at the Department of Swedish and Multilingualism, Stockholm University. She is a linguist and rhetoric researcher whose work focuses on language use for influencing in various power relationships, including those between politicians and voters or authorities and citizens.
Her research examines subtle forms of argumentation in media such as newspaper reports, TV talk shows, and social media platforms, particularly Twitter. She has developed expertise in crisis communication on social media and the concept of "soft governance" in an increasingly informalized public space. Dr. Almström Persson participates in the interdisciplinary network "Language and Politics" and Stockholm University's research area "Language and Power."
- Research Focus: Language and influence, political rhetoric, crisis communication
- Media Expertise: Newspaper reports, TV talk shows, social media analysis
- Teaching Specialties: Rhetoric (practical and theoretical), discourse-oriented text analysis
Her research reveals how informal discourse strategies are increasingly shaping public debate, with social media transforming democratic discourse into what she describes as a "modern-day agora." As an active public intellectual, Dr. Almström Persson frequently analyzes political rhetoric, notably examining the 2022 Swedish election campaign where she observed nearly all party leaders expressing "love for Sweden."
She serves on the editorial board of the Scandinavian journal Sakprosa and reviews for several academic journals. Dr. Almström Persson is co-author of the textbook "Språk i samspel. Retorik för pedagoger" and has contributed to teacher education within the educational pedagogical core (UVK 1), with additional educational materials scheduled for release in 2023.
