Guillaume Moreau is an Assistant Professor in the Department of Wood and Forest Sciences at Laval University, specializing in adaptive silviculture to global change. His research focuses on identifying silvicultural treatments that promote high-value product yields, stand resistance and resilience to multiple disturbances and climate stresses, while ensuring biodiversity conservation.
Dr. Moreau completed his academic training at Laval University, earning a Bachelor's degree in Forest Management and Environment (2015), Master's degree in Forestry Sciences (2017), and Doctorate in Forest Sciences (2020). He then pursued postdoctoral studies at Laval University (2021) and the University of Toronto (2023).
His research program is structured around three main components: First, reanalysis of existing silvicultural schemes to identify key stand attributes that confer high resistance and resilience, using a multidisciplinary approach combining dendrochronology and remote sensing. Second, incorporating high-resolution climate data into conventional forest growth models to refine growth anticipation and adapt silvicultural decisions. Third, implementing silvicultural trials to test and compare various adaptive strategies, including new approaches to thinning and assisted migrations.
Dr. Moreau's publication record demonstrates a strong focus on northern hardwood forests, climate change impacts on tree growth, and silvicultural practices. His work spans forest ecology, management, and climate adaptation, with particular attention to species like sugar maple and American beech. His research shows how climate stressors affect forest productivity and how silvicultural interventions can enhance forest resilience.
Scientific Recognition:
- Fellow of the Royal Canadian Geographical Society (FRCGS)
As a dedicated mentor, Dr. Moreau supervises multiple graduate students, including doctoral candidates Sébastien Dumont and Florence Leduc, and master's students Valentin Beaufils, Marie-Anne Michaud-Valcourt, Sandrine Benoît, Daphne Rose Courtès, and Marie-Pier Perron. His advising reflects his commitment to training the next generation of forest scientists who can address the challenges of climate change and sustainable forest management.
Dr. Moreau's work contributes significantly to developing practical silvicultural approaches that help forests adapt to changing environmental conditions while maintaining ecological integrity and economic value.
