Gro Steinsland is a Professor Emerita at the Department of Scandinavian Literature, University of Oslo. Her research focuses on Norse religion, mythology, and cultural history, particularly in the Viking Age and medieval periods. She has authored/co-authored numerous books and edited volumes, exploring topics such as religious rituals, sacred sites, and the intersection of myth and power.
Her scholarly contributions include works like Norrøn religion. Myter, riter, samfunn (2005) and Vølvens spådom (2001), often collaborating with Preben Meulengracht Sørensen. She has also served as an editor for volumes such as Religion och samhälle i det förkristne Norden (1999) and Words and Objects (1986).
Steinsland’s work bridges archaeology, literature, and religious studies, emphasizing interdisciplinary approaches to pre-Christian Scandinavian society. She has held affiliations with institutions like CAS (Center for Advanced Study) and has engaged in collaborative research on topics such as sacred marriage myths and the transition to Christianity.
