Grit Liebscher is a Professor in the Department of Germanic & Slavic Studies at the University of Waterloo. Her research explores language and identity formation in migration contexts, linguistic landscapes, and multilingual interaction patterns. She has received the university's Outstanding Performance Award twice (2013, 2023).
Liebscher's interdisciplinary research examines how language constructs social identities in migration contexts, particularly focusing on German diaspora communities in Canada and Europe. Her current SSHRC-funded project investigates ideologies of English in linguistic landscapes. She established the Social Interaction, Language and Culture Laboratory (SILC Lab) to advance multilingualism research.
