Grethe Melby is a Research Fellow (PhD candidate) in Theatre Studies at the Department of Linguistic, Literary and Aesthetic Studies, Faculty of Humanities, University of Bergen. She actively contributes to research and teaching, recently instructing courses including Introduction to Art, Theatre and Digital Culture; Performance Analysis and Theatre Criticism; and Theatre Aesthetics and Theory with focus on critical theory, feminism, and postcolonialism.
Her educational foundation includes a major in media studies from the Department of Information and Media Studies, where she conducted rhetorical analysis of free software debates involving figures like Jon Lech Johansen. Additional academic training spans administration and organizational science, literary studies, Nordic studies, and history, complemented by attendance at Bergen's Academy of Writing in 1994.
Research interests converge on theatre's intersection with public discourse, examining how BIT Teatergarasjen navigated Norwegian cultural policy through rhetorical strategies toward critics, politicians, and funding bodies. Her work bridges theatre history, media studies, and cultural rhetoric while incorporating digital culture frameworks and critical theoretical perspectives on power structures.
Melby actively participates in the Research Group for Rhetoric, Democracy and Public Culture and the Research Group for Theatre History and Dramaturgy. As an educator, she supervises bachelor's theses and draws on 15 years of upper secondary teaching experience across industrial studies, car mechanics, and health professions. She serves on the editorial board of Theatre Studies journal and contributes theatre criticism to Bergens Tidende, building on prior freelance work for Kunstkritikk.no, Billedkunst, and Scenekunst.no.
