Gretchen Heefner is a Professor and Chair of the Department of History at Northeastern University. She specializes in the history of the U.S. in the world, focusing on militarization, environmental history, and the intersections between national security regimes and everyday life.
Education:
- PhD in History, Yale University
Her research explores how the U.S. military has shaped global environments since the 1940s, as detailed in her books Sand, Snow and Stardust: How U.S. Military Engineers Conquered Extreme Environments and The Missile Next Door, which won a Choice Outstanding Academic Title award in 2013. Her recent articles examine topics such as Cold War military bases in Libya, nuclear infrastructure in Colorado, and gender dynamics in archival research.
