Grenthe Ingmar

Ingmar Grenthe (1933–2020) was a Professor of Inorganic Chemistry at the Royal Institute of Technology (KTH) in Stockholm from 1975 until his death. His research focused on chemical modeling of complex aqueous systems, actinide chemistry, and nuclear waste disposal. He held leadership roles as dean and prorector at KTH. Educated at Lund University, he earned a B.Sc. (1956), M.Sc. (1957), Licentiate (1959), and Ph.D. (1964) in inorganic chemistry, with early work on lanthanide and actinide complexes. He served on numerous national and international committees, including chairing the Swedish Foundation for Strategic Environmental Research and the Nobel Committee for Chemistry (1992–2001).

His career included visiting professorships at institutions such as Pennsylvania State University, ETH Zürich, and Forschungszentrum Karlsruhe. He contributed to over 150 scientific publications, ten patents, and supervised 20–25 graduate students. Grenthe’s current research (prior to his passing) emphasized collaborative work with quantum chemists on actinide dynamics and environmental applications, fostering networks between experimental and theoretical groups.
