Gregory W. Albers serves as the Coyote Foundation Professor and Professor of Neurology and Neurological Sciences at Stanford University School of Medicine, with a courtesy appointment in the Department of Neurosurgery. He has been Director of the Stanford Stroke Center at Stanford Medical Center since 1992 and is also a member of the Wu Tsai Neurosciences Institute.
Dr. Albers completed his medical education at the University of California San Diego School of Medicine in 1984, followed by an internship in Internal Medicine and residency in Neurology at Stanford University. He holds board certification in both Neurology (1990) and Vascular Neurology (2019) from the American Board of Psychiatry and Neurology.
His research program focuses on the acute treatment and prevention of cerebrovascular disorders, with particular emphasis on using advanced imaging techniques to expand the treatment window for ischemic stroke. Dr. Albers' laboratory conducts clinical studies of neuroprotective and thrombolytic strategies for acute stroke treatment while investigating new antithrombotic approaches for stroke prevention. His work has been instrumental in developing imaging-based selection criteria for endovascular stroke therapy, moving the field from rigid time-based treatment windows to individualized patient assessment.
Dr. Albers' recent publications demonstrate a consistent focus on improving stroke outcomes through better patient selection, understanding treatment complications, and expanding therapeutic time windows. His research spans advanced neuroimaging techniques, endovascular therapy efficacy, hemorrhagic complications, and novel pharmacological approaches to stroke management.
- Coyote Foundation Professor, Neurology and Neurological Sciences
Dr. Albers mentors students and fellows through various research programs at Stanford and has led numerous NIH-funded research projects. His clinical trials have established new paradigms for stroke treatment, particularly in expanding the time window for intervention using advanced imaging techniques. His development of the RAPID software for automated CT perfusion analysis has been adopted worldwide for stroke patient selection.
As Director of the Stanford Stroke Center, Dr. Albers oversees a comprehensive program integrating acute stroke care, research, and education. The center has developed protocols for rapid stroke evaluation and treatment that have been implemented nationally, significantly improving stroke outcomes through systematic, evidence-based approaches.
