Gregory Voth serves as the Haig P. Papazian Distinguished Service Professor in the Department of Chemistry at the University of Chicago, with affiliations at the James Franck Institute and Committee on Computational and Applied Mathematics (CCAM). His research group develops advanced computational methodologies to study complex biomolecular and condensed phase systems across multiple scales.
Research focuses on multiscale theory and simulation, particularly coarse-graining techniques for phenomena like protein-protein self-assembly, membrane-protein interactions, and charge transport. Recent work integrates machine learning with statistical mechanics to model quantum dynamics, lipid phase separation, and proton conduction in biological systems. The group emphasizes methodological innovation for applications in renewable energy materials and viral capsid simulations.
Analysis of recent publications reveals dominant trends in ultra-coarse-grained modeling, entropy-based force field development, and quantum-mechanical embeddings for reactive systems. Key advancements include machine learning-accelerated coarse-graining, proton transport mechanisms in aqueous acids, and microtubule dynamics modeling using equation-free methods.
Major recognitions include:
- ACS Award in Theoretical Chemistry (2025)
- BPS Innovation Award (2021)
- S F Boys-A Rahman Award (2019)
- Joel Henry Hildebrand Award (2019)
Professor Voth mentors numerous graduate students who secure prestigious fellowships including Miller Foundation, Metropolis, and NSF GRFP awards. His group receives substantial funding from NSF, DOE, and NIH for projects spanning quantum dynamics to biomolecular simulation. Current advisees include Sahrmann, Gupta, and Kaiser, while former students like Jin (2025 ACS Young Investigator) and Simunovic (NIH Innovator Award) demonstrate exceptional career trajectories.
The Voth Group operates advanced computational facilities and develops open-source software including RAPTOR for proton transport simulations and OpenMSCG for coarse-graining applications. Collaborations with experimental groups worldwide enable validation of theoretical models for membrane remodeling, actin dynamics, and ion channel mechanisms.
