Gregory Utley is an Associate Professor of Spanish at the University of Texas at Tyler, affiliated with the Literature and Languages department. He specializes in contemporary Colombian narrative, focusing on authors like R.H. Moreno-Durán, Fanny Buitrago, and Fernando Vallejo.
Dr. Utley holds a B.A. in Economics from San Jose State University (1987), an M.A. in Spanish from Fresno State University (1992), and a Ph.D. in Romance Languages: Spanish from The University of New Mexico (1997).
His research explores themes such as satire, cultural identity, and narrative techniques in Latin American literature. Publications include analyses of Moreno-Durán’s works, contemporary Colombian narratives, and Fanny Buitrago’s short stories. Current projects involve Fernando Vallejo’s La virgen de los sicarios.
He teaches courses ranging from language fundamentals to advanced topics like the History of the Spanish Language, Latin American Literature Surveys, and Nobel Prize Winners in Spanish American Literature.
