Dr. Gregory Tierney is a Senior Lecturer in Mechanical Engineering at the School of Engineering, Ulster University, with a dual teaching role in Mechanical and Biomedical Engineering programs. He earned his MEng in Mechanical Engineering (2014) from the University of Liverpool and a PhD in Biomedical Engineering (2018) from Trinity College Dublin, where he graduated top of his class.
- Research Focus: Injury biomechanics, wearable sensors, signal processing, and computer vision in sports injury prevention
- External Roles: Visiting Fellow at Leeds Beckett University, External Examiner at University of Chichester, and member of international sports safety committees
His research examines head acceleration events, concussion mechanisms, and tackle kinematics in rugby and other collision sports, with projects funded by World Rugby and industry partners. He leads the HEADSport and TaCKLE projects and co-supervises PhD students in sports biomechanics.
