Gregory Okin serves as Professor and Department Chair in Geography at UCLA's College of Social Sciences, holding a PhD from California Institute of Technology (2001). His research spans physical geography with emphasis on dryland processes, wind erosion, and remote sensing applications.
Research focuses on geomorphology, plant-soil interactions in arid environments, nutrient cycling, spatial modeling, and spectral analysis. Current work leverages NASA's EMIT mission for mineral dust source investigation and climate impact assessment.
Publications demonstrate expertise in spectroscopy-based research, featuring extensive work on mineral dust composition, wind erosion dynamics, and remote sensing validation. Recent studies emphasize quantitative modeling of dryland systems.
Teaching responsibilities include courses on Physical Geography, Soils, and Remote Sensing. Contact for departmental matters: chair@geog.ucla.edu; for academic inquiries: okin@geog.ucla.edu.
