His research centers on the History and Philosophy of Science, especially the History and Philosophy of Biology, with a strong emphasis on Applied Ethics. He investigates foundational questions in virology, such as whether viruses are alive, and explores the historical development of tumor virology. His work bridges scientific inquiry with philosophical analysis, particularly in molecular biology and ethics. He is currently working on a book titled Philosophy of Virology under contract with University of Pittsburgh Press.
His recent publications reveal a sustained focus on the philosophical and historical dimensions of virology, especially tumor viruses. The works span from historical narratives like Cancer Virus Hunters to conceptual debates about the nature of viruses. Collectively, they reflect deep engagement with both scientific practice and its ethical and philosophical implications, particularly in the context of molecular biology and medical research.
Scientific Awards and Honors:
- Phi Beta Kappa for the PhD
- Co-winner of the History of Science Society's 2009 Price-Webster Award for best article in Isis
- 2012–13 Sydney Brenner Fellowship at Cold Spring Harbor Laboratory Library and Archives and Genentech Center for History of Molecular Biology and Biotechnology
Gregory Morgan has secured significant research funding, including an NSF doctoral improvement award and an Alfred P. Sloan Foundation Award in 2016. While no direct students are named, his role as a professor and his academic leadership—such as serving as CAL P&T Chair and Faculty Senate Chair—suggest active mentorship and graduate advising. His professional service includes committee work for the International Society for History, Philosophy, and Social Studies of Biology (ISHPSSB), where he has contributed to prize evaluation and site selection.
Though no formal lab or research team is mentioned, his fellowship at Cold Spring Harbor Laboratory and his ongoing research projects indicate active participation in scholarly networks and collaborative intellectual communities focused on the history and philosophy of molecular biology and biotechnology.
