Gregory L Whiting is an Associate Professor in the Department of Mechanical Engineering at the University of Colorado Boulder. His research focuses on Additive Manufacturing, Printed Electronics, and Transient Electronics with applications in environmental monitoring, agriculture, and biomedical systems. He holds a B.A. in Chemistry from the University of California Berkeley and a Ph.D. from the University of Cambridge.
Whiting's work spans biodegradable sensors for soil and plant health monitoring, flexible electronics, and distributed sensor networks. His team collaborates on projects like the PANDAS initiative for precision agriculture, leveraging printed sensors to assess soil health and microbial activity. He has contributed to innovations in transient electronics that safely degrade in natural environments, minimizing ecological impact.
Notable achievements include a Best Paper Honorable Mention at the 2022 Designing Interactive Systems Conference (DIS ’22) for work on accessible textiles for people with disabilities. His advising includes student Annika Muehlbradt, co-author on the DIS paper.
Whiting's prior industry experience includes roles at Palo Alto Research Center and Google[X], where he applied advanced manufacturing and sensor technologies to real-world challenges. His research is funded through grants supporting sustainable materials and sensor development, with applications in agriculture, environmental science, and biomedical engineering.
