Gregory Hesselink is Assistant Professor of Music Performance at Ithaca College's School of Music, Theatre, and Dance. A renowned cellist, he maintains an active international career as a chamber musician, orchestral cellist, and soloist, performing across North America, Europe, Turkey, Japan, and Indonesia.
Hesselink's artistic focus centers on contemporary and new music, with over 150 premieres including cello concertos by Ross Bauer and Daniel Weymouth. His expertise spans chamber music interpretation, performance of works by Helmut Lachenmann and Harry Partch, and innovative collaborations with ensembles like New Millennium Ensemble (Naumburg Chamber Award winners) and Newband.
His accolades include the CMA/ASCAP Award for Adventurous Programming, NEA grants, Ditson Fund support, Copland and Mary Flagler Cary recording grants, and commissioning grants from Fromm, Meet the Composer, and NYSCA.
As an educator, Hesselink has taught at Princeton University, Sarah Lawrence College, Hunter College, and Mannes College Preparatory Division for 20 years. He currently instructs at Ithaca College and conducts masterclasses at Yellow Barn, Apple Hill Center for Chamber Music, and other summer festivals.
Professional affiliations include ongoing performances with Locrian Chamber Players, Orchestra of the League of Composers, and Riverside Symphony (as principal cellist), alongside past work with Bang on a Can Spit Orchestra and American Symphony.
