Gregory D. Smithers is a Professor of American History in the Department of History at Virginia Commonwealth University, specializing in Indigenous and African American histories from the 18th century to present with emphasis on Cherokee peoples and environmental narratives.
Education
- Ph.D. in History, University of California, Davis
- B.A. (First Class Honours), Australian Catholic University
Research Interests: Smithers' work centers on Native American history, environmental history, and intersections of race, gender, and sexuality. His scholarship examines Cherokee diaspora, Two-Spirit identities, and settler colonial impacts, connecting historical analysis to contemporary social justice and environmental sustainability through publicly accessible narratives.
