Professor Grant Allen is a faculty member at the University of Toronto's Faculty of Applied Science and Engineering, specializing in Chemical Engineering & Applied Chemistry. He holds the Frank Dottori Chair in Pulp and Paper Engineering and serves as Principal Investigator for both the Bioprocess Engineering Lab and BioZone - Centre for Applied Bioscience and Bioengineering. His research focuses on environmentally sustainable bioprocess engineering.
- B.A.Sc., M.A.Sc. (Toronto), Ph.D. (Waterloo)
- Professional Engineer (P.Eng.)
- Leadership roles: Department Chair (2011-2021), Vice-Dean (2007-2011)
Research interests span algal biofilm engineering for carbon capture and wastewater valorization through anaerobic digestion and biosludge processing. His work integrates chemical engineering, biotechnology, and microbiology to develop minimum impact technologies for industrial applications.
Recent publications highlight algal biofilm productivity, protein-based dewatering, and waveguide technology for light delivery. Collaborative projects involve engineers, microbiologists, and industry partners across bioprocess optimization, biofilm characterization, and sustainable chemical production.
